What is an agentic system?
An agentic system is the execution layer between your tools and your team: it is triggered by real business events, moves and transforms information across the software you already run, interprets input that isn't structured enough for a plain rule, and stops for a human before anything sensitive is committed. It covers both ends of a spectrum, deterministic workflow automation and AI agents that read and judge, because in practice a single useful system usually needs some of each.
The distinction that matters isn't the technology, it's the input. When the trigger is clear and the rule stable, wiring it deterministically is cheaper, faster and more reliable than involving a model. When the input arrives as an email, a photo of field notes or a messy document, something has to interpret it before any rule can apply. Deciding which half of that line a task falls on is the first real piece of work.
Why these used to be two services and aren't anymore
Workflow automation and custom AI agents were sold separately across the market, which pushes buyers into picking a technology before they've described the problem. It produces agents doing work a five-step automation would have done more reliably, and rigid automations breaking on the first email that doesn't fit the template.
They're one engagement here. You describe the task; the routing to workflow, agent or a combination of both happens during scoping, and the cheaper option that actually works is the one you get. That recommendation costs you nothing and sometimes concludes that neither is the right move yet.

Inquiries arrive by email and form, and answering them well takes research time nobody has.
